We also make ours mandatory as well. We shared our ceremony with the other languages in our department and on the acceptance letter, it gave the specifics about the date and time of the inductions. There will be some students as always with conflicts which are unavoidable, but out of 70 or so new members each year, I get about 60-65 to attend. It also sets the tone for the year that you would like them to participate. Good luck!
At my former chapter in normal years we had a fall induction in which attendance was mandatory. We shared our induction with NHS, ArtNHS, FrenchNHS, etc. Families were notified well in advance of the date and everyone attended except for very extenuating circumstances, such as a sporting event.
I have laid it on super thick that they MUST go. However, with 60+ members and they are the TOP kids who are involved in everything to boot, there is always someone who can't make it and it is okay. This year we are combining our Ceremonia de honors we usually do in May with our induction ceremony (usually in January) the second week of May. The kids are so excited to get together physically, I bet they'll all come!
So basically, I let them know it's a HUGE deal, but if they can't, it isn't the end of the world.
I am a new sponsor, having only done two inductions (one in the fall for 2020 that had been delayed and one just now for 2021). I do not make induction mandatory. I feel like it should feel celebratory and not a like a "must do." I figure if the officers and I do our jobs right, the kids will want to come. That's my two cents!
